Have you ever wanted to redesign your space with items you have? And perhaps already have in place, but don’t love the outcome? I work in the AI field of technology in a business that provides self-service automation for just about every type of company you can imagine. Finance, Healthcare, Travel, etc. You know the ones that are set to “take over the world”.

In all seriousness though, we strive to make customer experiences better….blah blah blah. That is another blog post waiting to happen. I am here though to demonstrate how AI is being used to help redesign my space. Kind of a virtual makeover then finalizing the touches and sharing the real outcome!

First I took some photos of my real space as it is today. I then uploaded them into ChatGPT. And because I like variety I also loaded the same into Copilot.

Here are my before images.

If you have played with AI and images, you have to provide prompts to tell it what you want to do. Here are my sample prompts and with each one I uploaded either both images or just the collection of items to give it an idea of what I had so it could give me design ideas.

Prompt 1 on ChatGPT: I have these items on a wall but would like to arrange them better. There is one framed set of 3 pictures. 12 mickey ears and one canvas painting. Pics attached for reference.

The response was to use the anchors – Canvas painting and framed pics. And 3 Options.

  1. Balanced Gallery – Hang canvas left of center, hand framed pic right of center. Align top edges. Then divide the ears into halos, framing the canvas and the photo frame.
  2. Symmetrical ‘Mickey Museum’ look. Center the canvas, place the framed photo below it. Arrange ears into vertical columns.

There were a few more tweaks with the prompting and guides, but you need to try it out because it’s kind of a cool way to get inspiration. So the final output was to create a picture. You will notice that AI sometimes takes freedom with this. It tried to use all my ears, but embellished a bit on the first image below.

Try 2, I reminded it that I had a printer table under the items on the wall. This is not my exact table of course in the picture. But I also said give me ideas for things to add. I think it did a great job and made a fun, more cohesive wall from my items and things I can hunt for around my house or when shopping.

Now let’s move onto Copilot powered by Microsoft. Since I had already done this once with ChatGPT, I framed my prompt a little differently so I wouldn’t have to step through iterations as much. – we humans learn too 🙂

My prompt: i want to make this space in my office look more curated and cuter. i love my Disney collection but want it to come together better. can you design a look for me. I have the following pics added. (I uploaded both pics, but I am not sure it took).

Again it gave some great suggestions.

  1. Curated Disney Display with an Anchor piece (the canvas), hat styling – instead of spreading them out loosely mount them on a clean grid or staggered shelf display. Photo collage, it suggested a reframe in a larger mat or frame to match the canvas.
  2. Workspace Styling – Cabinet top it suggested to group the items in threes (printer on one side and then a styled vignette of the pineapple container and my LEGO tree.
  3. It also suggested perhaps a floating shelve above the Disney figures or add some quotes.

The outcome! I was laughing out loud with the redesign and the half ear in the image. And oh my what it did to my photos of my girls with Belle. But the concept is actually kind of fun and it used my actual cabinet for the most part! And what stood out to me was the way the 6 slot curio shelf was turned on it’s side.

Now for my take on the suggestions. Paired down the ears a bit and I went with the vertical placement of the shelf. Cleaned it up a bit and the reveal below! I do like it with a lot less clutter. Part of me wants every moment and every item to be in the final, but it’s cleaner without it all. Less is more.
